Vietnam secured a historic win over Belgium, who are 21 places above them in the world rankings, to win bronze at the 2024 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Challenger Cup on Sunday. Thanh Thuy, a star Vietnamese volleyball player, and her teammates faced Belgium after beating hosts Philippines in the opening match of the four-day tournament, then losing 0-3 to the Czech Republic in the semi-finals. Vietnam, ranked 34th in the world, started the match confidently and somehow managed to unsettle their European opponents, who are ranked 13th. The Vietnamese team maintained a steady lead, before being briefly tied at 21-21 and coming back to win the first set 25-23. Belgium won the second set and Vietnam won the third, only to enter the final fourth set confidently and also win. The bronze medal was Vietnam’s biggest success at the FIVB Challenger Cup.
