HANOI – Vietnamese badminton players are looking to bring home a couple of world titles this week in Indonesia and Germany.

Public number two Nguyen Hai Dang has been ranked fifth in the men’s singles event at the WONDR organised by BNI Indonesia Experts II 2024, which will be held from October 29 to November 3 in Surabaya.

The Vietnamese player has a bye into the next round, when he will face the winner of the match between Thailand’s Saran Jamsri and a qualifier to be decided on October 29.

Another Vietnamese representative, Bui Thanh Dat, begins his title challenge in the qualification round. He will face Thailand’s Varot Uraiwong in what will be his most memorable match.

In the women’s bracket, Vu Thi Anh Thu and Le Ngoc Van will be speaking for Vietnam.

Thu, ranked No. 144 in the world, will play host No. 122 Bilqis Prasista in the main round.

Van will face Malaysia’s Yi Xing Ung in the talent round.

Nearly 300 competitors will compete in the Indonesian tournament, which will feature five rankings, men’s and women’s singles and mixed singles.

A total of US$100,000 in cash prizes and world ranking points are open to anyone.

Meanwhile in Germany, two-time Olympian Nguyen Thuy Linh is ranked fourth in the women’s singles at the Hylo Open 2024, which will be played from October 29 to November 3.

This is her second international appearance this month, after the VICTOR Denmark Open 2024, where she was eliminated in the next round.

Linh has arrived in Saarbrucken and has two days to prepare for her most memorable match, which she is very much looking forward to.

In the main draw, she will play Rachael Darragh from Ireland.

Linh, ranked 32nd in the world, is expected to cross paths with Darragh, who is much lower in the rankings, at No. 96.

If she wins, her next match will be against either Denmark’s No. 65 Amalie Schulz or Azerbaijan’s No. 75 Keisha Fatimah Azzahra.

Linh’s first big test will be in the quarterfinals, where she could face India’s Malvika Bansod, ranked sixth in the competition and No. 35 in the world.

Linh easily beat Bansod 21-13, 21-12 in the second round of the VICTOR Denmark Open fourteen days ago.

Vietnamese champion Le Duc Phat was initially expected to compete in the men’s singles event, but he withdrew without a second due to personal reasons.

The Hylo Open, one of World Visit’s annual events, has a total prize pool of $210,000 and world ranking positions for the winning players.
